Irony

Irony

Irony is an implied discrepancy between what is said and what is meant. When I was younger I was a trouble maker. I used to give my mom hell at home and always had her worried when I wasn't home on time. My mom thought I was going to be a failure in life and it wasn't hard for anyone else to agree with her about that. My grades in school were below average, my social life was surrounded by negativity, and everybody was expecting me to become a dropout. Then suddenly, in my sophomore year in high school my life made a complete 180 degree circle of lifestyle. That was the year I met Mr. Eugene Smith, a councelor in Norman Thomas High School that works with the S.P.A.R.K. program. He is responsible for me seeing things in a more diverse perspective that actually made my life better. I became a more independent, responsible, intellectual, and hard working young man. My mom began to notice my change in attitude and inspiration towards my future. It's ironic because I was expected to become a dropout at first, but now my mom cant wait to go to my college graduation.

In the poem "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson the character Richard Cory is being described as a gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored, and imperially slim. He's a really nice person in the outside. In the rest of the poem they just describe how he was rich and he was this man that everyone looked up to. It was hard to believe that at the end of the poem he shot himself in the head. I find this poem extremely ironic because how can a person that has everything that everyone else in town wants kill himself. It's like a group of birds that can't fly except one, and the one bird that can fly jumps off a cliff and does spread his wings. It makes me wonder if when I get settled in life and I have a degree and career, will I still go through problems? Will my problems get worst? Will I have a better life? Is it worth it?

I came across something very ironic in the short story "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. The story is about a young couple and both the girl and the guy sacrificed their most valuable treasure to buy one another a gift. The girl's name was Della and she sacrificed her long hair so that she can buy a platinum fob chain for her boyfriend Jim's gold watch that has been passed down from his father. She sold her beautiful hair because she didn't have enough money to buy him a nice gift. Now, Jim on the other hand sold his watch to buy her very nice and expensive combs for her to comb her hair with. Its ironic because you would never expect for something like this to happen. It's ironic how Della sold her hair to buy a gift for Jim and recieved combs as a gift from Jim and it's ironic how Jim sold his watch to buy a gift for Della and recieved a chain for his watch as from Della.
